Nancy took a break from painting for a Road Trip to Canon City to visit with Kim Smith. Why?? The clothsline of Barn Quilts now stretches from North to South in Colorado. The number of Barn Quilts are growing in Brush Colorado. There are 3 new barn quilts that have been completed are are up n the pump house on Clayton Street in Brush, Coloroado.

The most dedicated volunteers from Colorado Welcome Center toured some of Colorado's highlights that included a bus tour of the Morgan County Barn Quilt Trail. Nancy guided them on a small portion of the trail before they went on into Brush to see their other hightlights.

What an amazing start to the 2011 Barn Quilt Season. While passing though Ft. Morgan, I stopped in to visit, and Nancy has been busy painting with 5 barn quilts nearly finished and has plans to start a large one that looked fun. Looking forward to seeing that one get finished. She has a few more planned.

Fun Fact: Fort Morgans Diamond Vogel donates the paint for Nancy to paint a portion of these beautiful Barn Quilts!! Thanks Diamond Vogel. If you're interested in a barn quilt of your own, make sure you contact Nancy soon as she only does so many each summer.

First Barn Quilt in Washington County, Colorado!!!

On Thursday May 5, Nancy headed to Washington County, Colorado for the YWKC League Art Event. Nancy and the art teacher Cathy Martin worked with 40 students in grades 9-12 from the areas schools. The students designed the quilt block and each color in the block is represented by each school.

   Otis and Bethune - true red
   Idalia - maroon
   Lone Star - royal or med blue

Nancy showed the students the finer points of taping and painting a barn quilt. The barn quilt will be the first to be displayed in Washington County, Colorado.

Painting Barn Quilts??

Nancy spent her Saturday morning painting...um, well, what else, Barn Quilts, but not quite what you might think. She participated in the Morgan County Art Councils, Fort Morgan Mural Project.
Workshops are on Saturdays from 9-1 for anyone who is wanting to participate, check out the website http://mcartscouncil.blogspot.com/ for more info.

Barn quilts grace Morgan County buildings - Staff Reports and Nancy Lauck - Fort Morgan Times: Posted: 03/11/2010 05:41:23 PM MST

Nancy Lauck, barn quilt project coordinator, has compiled a list of the sites.

When viewing and enjoying the quilt trail use caution when slowing or stopping near a site, Lauck cautioned.

Stopping along busy roads can be dangerous and illegal, she pointed out.

All sites are on private property and should be viewed from the public road unless otherwise indicated at the site, Lauck said; on business they are open to the public.

The Morgan County Barn Quilt Project is meant to beautify local barns, preserve Northeast Colorado heritage and promote economic vitality, project organizers said.

The idea came from an article several years Country quilt A Farmers Daughter barn quilt adorns a building on the farm of Kit and Linda Carlson on County Road 20. (John La Porte/Fort Morgan Times)ago in American Profile magazine, which runs in The Fort Morgan Times, said project instigator Pat Knight.

Quilt patterns are painted on plywood and displayed on barns — and on other buildings, some of them downtown businesses.

Lauck custom-painted many of the barn quilts. She can use designs that reflect a person's heritage, occupation, hobbies, religion or other personal traits.

Lauck is a quilt enthusiast and former quilt shop owner.

Diamond-Vogel of Fort Morgan donated paint, and the Morgan County Arts Council covered plywood expenses."

Workers from the Morgan County Rural Electric Association wrap up installation of a new barn quilt on Jim and Dee Oswald’s barn at 21338 Road R between Fort Morgan and Brush. The quilt was one of 11 installed on Nov. 24 by the MCREA, which was working with the Morgan County Arts Council. The council creates and installs the quilts for free to promote tourism and preserve cultural heritages in Morgan County.

Project would create cozy barn quilt replicas

Though their bright colors and geometric shapes are characteristic of traditional fabric quilts, the painted-plywood barn quilts found throughout Morgan County aren’t exactly soft and snuggly.

But Morgan County Barn Quilt Project Coordinator Nancy Lauck hopes to soon complement many area barn quilts with comfy, cozy replicas.

“It’s just a branch off our barn quilts,” she said.

Lauck recently created a fabric quilt that illustrates the designs on all 16 barn quilts displayed on her property north of Highway 34 between Fort Morgan and Brush.

Lauck hopes hers will be the first in a collection of fabric quilts that replicate the designs on all barn quilts mounted on Morgan County barns.

She would like to eventually display the whole set of fabric quilts at special events throughout Morgan County. The displays would not only attract more people to local events, she said, but they would generate more interest in the artworks mounted on Morgan County barns.

Some people display the barn quilts on business buildings and other structures, but Lauck said she is only interested in creating fabric replicas of those that hang on barns.

“We can draw more people to the barns,” she said. “We need to bring more attention to the barns that we have left in Morgan County.”

Lauck said she is not yet sure how the fabric quilt project would play out.

“I really am open to suggestions because I’ve got the idea of doing it, I just need more bodies to help,” she said.

Lauck said any effort to replicate Morgan County’s barn quilts in fabric would not be a moneymaking venture. Like the barn quilt project, she said, the fabric quilt project would probably be successful only through utilizing donated time and supplies.

She has considered asking members of local quilting groups if they would help make the fabric quilts. Additionally, some barn owners may want to quilt their own replicas to add to the collection, she said.

“I could even teach them,” she said.
